AdvanceKentucky’s mission is to work with local, state and national partners to dramatically expand access to and participation and success in rigorous college-level work in high school, particularly among student populations traditionally underrepresented in these courses. We began in 2008 as one of the initial six states implementing the National Math and Science Initiative’s AP Teacher Incentive Program. Through the College Readiness Program, we support program schools that offer (or wish to offer) AP Computer Science Principles and AP Computer Science A. We are happy to continue our AP program where we help grow and sustain AP students and teachers of mathematics, computer science, science, and English courses. We have expanded our mission to include middle school mathematics and computer science. In 2016, AdvanceKentucky became a Code.org Regional Partner. We are also the professional development provider for the Kentucky Computer Science Initiative, a partnership that includes the Kentucky Department of Education, the College Board, and Code.org. Through this initiative, we are working to recruit and train up to a total of 150 high school teachers, 100 middle school teachers, and 300 elementary school teachers over three years to offer computer science courses throughout Kentucky. We are planning more opportunities for computer science teachers in the near future.
